I have been scopin' out my favorite site this morning, SplitCoastStampers....and I came across this file to download a new tool to help us crafters cut our cardstock with little or no waste! WAHOOO! Julie from SCS make this calculator tool in Excel and here is the write-up she has about it:
I've created a dynamic cutting calculator in Excel that allows you to enter your cardstock measurements from which the calculator will provide the number of pieces you'll get depending on the orientation and size of cardstock being cut.
It will also calculate the number of cardstock sheets you'll need to supply your project appropriately.
I've passed this tool to Demo Support at Stampin' Up as a business tool suggestion. Please let me know if you find this helpful or if you have any suggestions to improve this.
**Known Tool Limitation**
This tool's computations are not capable of maximizing cuts by combining different sized dimensions cut from a single side of the cardstock, for example a scrap cut. The design of the tool is to get the most "whole" cuts from each side of cardstock using identical dimensions.
There are going to be occassions where you could get one additional cut by cutting from a piece of scrap. However, the tool cannot help in planning for that.
For example, take a 12 x 12 piece of cardstock. You need to pieces that are 4" x 8". If you enter those dimensions into the tool it will tell you that you can get three pieces from a single sheet of 12 x 12.
To cut, you cut at 8" across the top. Down the side you cut at 4" and 8". You end up with three pieces as the tool indicated.
However, you also end up with a piece of scrap from the other direction that measures 4" x 12". This scrap could then be cut once at 8", providing one additional piece. So instead of three pieces you really end up with four.
This is a known limitation of the tool. If you're using the tool I would suggest you watch for that.
